Urban Agriculture-Vertically!

I stumbled across the Vertical Farm Project this past weekend. The idea, in their own words: “Vertical farms, many stories high, will be situated in the heart of the world’s urban centers. If successfully implemented, they offer the promise of urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply (year-round crop production), and the eventual repair of ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming.”

Check out some of the designs–crazy looking stuff! Looks like Dr. Dickson Despommier out of Columbia University is the head of the project.

UPDATE: Download the call notes for December 15th here (PDF), and December 16th here (PDF). We held two calls to accomodate demand.

Learn the process used to design a high quality, well integrated agriculture based youth development program. We will discuss TFPs “onion”, a layered approach to creating a youth experience along a continuum with increasing responsibility, challenge, and skill development.

BLAST Teleconferences feature an expert from The Food Project or a partner organization speaking for 20 minutes on the topic, followed by an hour of dialogue and Q&A from participants. See our teleconference schedule, and email teleconference@thefoodproject.org for more information.

If Only I Spoke Swahili: A Trip to Uganda

Anim is The Food Project’s Associate Director.

Kampala, Uganda
November 27, 2005

* IF ONLY I SPOKE SWAHILI… *

I am writing this on a laptop borrowed from my dad, sitting on the lawn of his apartment complex in Kampala, Uganda. Less than 40 feet from me and on the other side of a tall wire fence are half a dozen soldiers guarding the entrance to State House, the President’s residence. If I spoke Swahili or Luganda, I could eavesdrop (which I would love to do!). Across the street and down the hill is the Sheraton Kampala, whose wireless network I will go use to send this message. Underneath me and the tree I am leaning against, I’ve counted at least five different kinds of ants going about their ant business. Click here for the rest of this entry…

BLAST Discussions

Many people have asked for a way to interact online, and we hope that this will be a place for us all to connect by sharing our opinions and discuss issues that we find relevant. Anyone will be able to make comments to posts in this section (including this one). If, however, you want to start a new thread of conversation, please email me at dfitz@thefoodproject.org and I can add your idea.

We hope that this space will be valuable by sparking discussions among this talented and diverse group of young people, by raising new issues and challenging each of our beliefs, by helping us all find our own voices and opinions, and by allowing us all to talk to each other about what is of interest to us. The Food Project is setting up this space, but it belongs to everyone and we hope that everyone shares opinions, news articles, criticisms, and comments in a way that is respectful.
