2005 BLAST Day of Action

It all happened on Wednesday August 3, 2005. An army of thirty-two Food Project interns in bright yellow “banana colored” shirts led by only a few staff wearing the same, charged into Copley Square and changed the way the many unhealthy food habits that inner city people had. First we started off by picking our weapon of mass local eating on our turf in Lincoln, Massachusetts then of course washing it to make sure it was clean then we drove it over to our battlefield where we unloaded, bunched, and tagged, our carrots.

Yes, carrots. I know what you’re thinking. Why carrots? Why not beets, cherry tomatoes, peppers or collard greens? Well I have the answer. The Food Project uses carrots to pass out on the day of action instead of anything else because its small to carry they’re easy to transport, they’re recognizable, everyone knows they taste good and they can’t be hurled at us like tomatoes can. Carrots are the face of The Food Project.

We started at about 11:00 in the morning at Copley Square. We separated ourselves while handing out carrots to complete strangers walking down the street, just so they can know how good fresh food can taste. Which is better than eating something that has been dipped in wax to maintain the look of freshness. Not only did we hand out carrots with yellow tags on them to tell people about why they should be eating local but we also showed them by having a taste test with store donated tomatoes and picked fresh cherry tomatoes.

The funniest part about the whole event was the people. There were some nicely dressed interns that wouldn’t take the carrots. There were the weird people that either talked to certain individuals about local food, or talked about something else totally irrelevant for what seemed like hour at a time. There was always that selective few that knew exactly what we were talking about but very few.

Overall our journey to making the country a better place by promoting local foods went better than I thought it would. Now more and more people can eat their food with safety.
