On August 1, 2006, to raise awareness of local agriculture, The Food Project was lucky enough to show a film at The Somerville Theater called The Real Dirt On Farmer John. We had a very nice turn out. The movie was amazing. The Real Dirt On Farmer John is a touching tale about a man whose family had farmed on his farm for generations and his struggle to keep his career and sanity alive after losing everything he had ever known.

BLAST has the responsibility of giving the “Food: Whose Choice is it Anyways?” workshop to different groups and organizations. Our goal in giving the workshop is to raise awareness about the different food options available to consumers and in the process, offer some healthy alternatives to less desirable (but far more accessible) foods. Our most recent opportunity to give the Food Choices workshop was at Sportsmen’s Tennis Club in Dorchester. BLAST Interns started a garden in the area behind the courts last year, and thus we have already established a strong relationship with the youth tennis camp. Every Monday during the summer, the BLAST interns get a chance to work with the youth in our garden.

Last year in the summer youth program, interns mystified and impressed me. And when those interns spoke at community lunch, my mind was blown. How were they so confident? Where did they learn all this cool stuff about agriculture and the food system? This summer, my questions were answered. I became one of the few, the proud, the interns.

The Bowditch House is a transitional housing facility. The Blast interns have started a garden, which has been a great success. We have had a wonderful turn out on vegetables and herbs. This garden was made for the residents who live at the Bowditch house to harvest and eat from. The residents have done a fantastic job watering and maintaining the garden. Since we are there only on Mondays the people there do most of the weeding. Monday July 31,2006 we were able to cook lunch with the Bowditch residents. (Recipes below!)
