Lily is a BLAST Intern here at The Food Project.
I am, at times, prompted to do strange things in the name of The Food Project. For instance, last August I found myself dressed up in a homemade eggplant costume, passing out carrots to complete strangers telling them that they should eat locally. I was a part of Carrot Day, one event during Eat In, Act Out Week.
Eat In, Act Out Week works to promote public awareness about local agriculture. Last year, over forty different groups in three different countries sponsored events that educated the public about how and why to eat locally. These events ranged from an organic farming conference in St. Lucia to a biking tour of community gardens in Brooklyn, NY. At The Food Project, we donned carrot hats and eggplant costumes and went to work, hosting a different activity each day.
This year, Eat In, Act Out will be even bigger. We will expand the scope of Eat In, Act Out Week by getting restaurants and farmers markets involved. In Boston, we will sponsor cook-offs and vegetable taste-tests. We will lead nutrition workshops and post signs marking stores that sell local food. We hope to have the week proclaimed Eat In, Act Out Week by the state of Massachusetts.
