Hello TFP Alumni!

Hello TFP Alumni! My name is Dominique Powell. I worked with The Food Project as a crew worker in the summer of 1997, as a DIRT Crew member in AYP in 1997-1998, and as Assistant Crew Leader in the summer of 1998. I had a wonderful time and learned so much from The Food Project – public speaking, confidence, leadership, importance of teamwork, and things of that nature. To this day, at the age of 24, I still utilize these skills in my daily life and I will never forget those years.

I have been doing many different things in my life that I never thought that I would do. After graduating from Boston Latin Academy in the year 2000, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. The experience was very enriching though a very difficult journey. I’ve done many different things in the Marines, among them communication as well as being a rifle and pistol marksmanship coach. After my contract was up in 2004, I came to work with The Food Project as an Urban Education Fellow. My supervisor and I went around to neighborhood gardeners educating them about lead poisoning in their soil and in the vegetables that they grow. We also helped remediate their soil by building raised beds and adding compost. I then continued on with The Food Project in my current position as the youth programs assistant. I am also a full time college student and am in the Air Force Reserves.

So now all of you have heard my story and I would love to hear yours. I invite all of you to post your story on the Alumni blog. What have you been up to? How are you doing? What have you done lately? Let us know. We love to keep in contact with our Alumni.

    Hi,

I googled my maiden name and found you. Weird, hey? I won’t assume your ethnic background or gender, but I am a 27 year-old white, female. I was also in the military, the U.S. Army to be exact. I finished my 4 year duty on 9/11/01, no lie.
I don’t know anything about horticulture, since I am an electronics technician.
I just thought that maybe at least our parents have something in common.

Nice to meet you, good luck in your journey.

    Take Care,

    Dominique Powell York
