Event was a success, despite the very HOT and HUMID weather we had that week. Thank you for all of your help and support of this project. The teens did an exceptional job, putting a lot of time, energy and effort into this project. The teens who ran the event, Sarah Jick and Emily Miller, gave out samples of foods they had made from locally grown products, with free recipes for the public to take home, including Chocolate Zucchini bread, bruschetta with fresh tomato basil and garlic and Blueberry Lemonade. The Lexington Farmers Market donated all ingredients for this event. This gave them a chance to start a discussion with the public about locally grown food, and the importance of support local farmers.

There was a raffle that about 50 people entered for a chance to win 1 of several prizes. The teens purchased an apple from New Zealand, took off the sticker, and displayed it at their booth. They asked the public to guess how far the apple had traveled to get to the market. The person that came closest to the estimated mileage the apple had traveled was the winner.
The apple traveled 9,131 miles…. Guesses ranged from 10 miles to 10,000.

Two first prizes were awarded:
One 1st prize winner received an autographed copy of The New Victory Garden (donated by the author) and a Lexington Farmers’ Market Apron. The other 1st prize winner received an autographed cooking book, The Farmstead Egg Cookbook by Terry Golson and a Lexington Farmers’ Market Apron.

Two Second Price Winners Received Lexington Farmers’ Market Aprons, and two 3rd place winners received 2 Global Warming Mugs that have a picture of the continents on them. When you pour hot liquid in them, the continents shrink!

Overall, the event got people thinking about where their food comes from and the importance of supporting locally grown food. Public was interested in what we were doing, and the farmers came over to cheer us on! Once we had two motivated teens, Sarah Jick and Emily Miller, the event went smoothly. They were exceptional and did a fabulous job!
