A group of Food Project youth and staff attended the 2006 National Society for Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Conference. This is a reflection on that event.
I had a great time at MANRRS. When I first got there I was nervous but thrilled at the same time. That evening when we entered the dining area I felt happy but anxious again to see so many adults and a small group of kids our age. As Brittney and I sat at the dinner table, people began to sit with us. As we started to talk they became more and more interested at what we do here at The Food Project. They kept asking questions, but many of them lost interest after a while because of the fact that we were young and seemed inexperienced.
The trip got more appealing as the days went by. When the college fair came by the college students became more insightful to us then I thought they would become. They had so much advice for us on what colleges to pick, what to do, and what not to do. They became in a way like big brothers and sisters. My favorite part of the trip would have to be the college/job fair, the people were so willing to answer questions and give out all the information they had. MANRRS was a great experience for me. Although it started out bumpy I had a great time and I definitely think this should be a conference that we should attend again and again.
