The position involves leading a small team of high school aged students in the provision of an award-winning nutrition education outreach program. This outreach program is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania and primarily focuses on the West Philadelphia community. The position requires interaction with and supervision of high school and college students. This position also collaborates closely with other youth program coordinators, community partners, school teachers, and parents. Job duties entail the planning, implementation, and oversight of training activities. These training activities will prepare participating youth to conduct peer nutrition education outreaches. Additionally, the coordinator will assist with developing outreach partnerships, outreach planning, and event planning. Applicants must have experience working with youth in an educational and/or job-training setting. Knowledge of health and nutrition is also critical. Food safety and culinary training considered a plus.

This is a part-time position that will require up to 30 hours per week. Those hours will be concentrated on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 1:30-6:30 p.m and possibly Thursday’s during the day; occasional flexible hours may be required. Hourly wage range from $12-$16 per hour is commensurate with experience.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Apprentice Garden Teacher assists in the teaching of daily garden classes for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, and works with the ESY garden team to maintain a one-acre organic educational garden.
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
TEACHING
- Assist Garden Staff in teaching daily garden classes
- Guide students through propagation, planting, cultivation, and maintenance of the garden, including teaching of structured lessons and activities
- Be a positive role model for students in and out of class. Show curiosity for learning and encourage students’ interests and talents
- Engage in creative use of garden as educational space through designing and teaching an after school class
GARDEN
- Assist in all aspects of maintaining a healthy educational garden: including but not limited to irrigation, soil fertility, pest and weed control and chicken care
- Share the responsibility of caring for the summer garden with Garden Manager & Teacher and Assistant Garden Manager and Teacher
COMMUNICATION & OUTREACH
- As a member of educational and sustainable agriculture communities, represent ESY program to the local community and greater public
- Maintain communication and relationships with ESY staff, King teachers, garden volunteers, parents, neighbors and school garden educators
- Participate in ESY staff meetings, program development meetings and any ESY, community or school-wide events where appropriate
- Maintain awareness of and participate in school, individual, and media visits
TRAINING & SUPERVISION
- Report to the Garden Manager &Teacher and collaborate with the ESY staff
- Participate in regular feedback sessions with Garden Manager & Teacher to set goals and responsibilities, evaluate performance and reflect on education
- Participate in Garden Trainings and other Professional Development opportunities including conferences and staff development days
- Evaluations and ongoing mentorship will be led by Garden Manager& Teacher
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
- 1-2 years experience teaching middle or high school students
- Comfort and experience with physical outdoor work, in all weather
- Experience with or interest in learning about gardening in Berkeley
- Ability to work independently, organize time and see a project through from start to finish
- Familiarity with Bay Area youth culture
- Bi-lingual is a plus
SALARY RANGE $24,000 - $27,000

Energize your Life! Join other youth organizations in the BLAST network for a great day of learning and sharing. Experience the union of local agriculture and renewable energy at Seeds of Solidarity Farm and Education Center, which runs on solar electricity, uses bio-diesel in vehicles and employs no-till methods and solar greenhouses to ‘grow food everywhere’ and reduce fossil fuels. Seeds of Solidarity staff and youth in their SOL (Seeds of Leadership) Garden project will co-host this BLAST gathering with The Food Project staff and youth leaders.

The Youth Horticulture Project (YHP) is a program of the University of Vermont Extension that helps at-risk youth experience success while they develop job and life skills through the growing, harvesting and marketing of vegetable crops. Programs include a farm-based job training program for teenagers, a mentoring program where teens lead elementary youth in garden and nutrition workshops, and a variety of school partnerships. As a team the youth grow vegetables, sell them at farmers’ markets and provide them for donation to local food shelves and homeless shelters. Participants also engage in workshops aimed at teaching them a variety of social skills in addition to agricultural concepts. All programs take place at UVM Extension’s 2 acre educational farm in Brattleboro.
Youth Horticulture Project Full-Time AmeriCorps Position: The VISTA member works independently and in a team at UVM Extension’s 2-acre farm to educate youth from diverse backgrounds on the importance of a healthy, local agriculture, to create and strengthen local food-system partnerships, and to lead young people in their work on the farm and in connecting with their community in experiences of enterprise, farming, and community service.
The position starts with a regional AmeriCorps training and UVM orientation in January 2009. This position will be based in Brattleboro but may require some travel. This is not a university position and does not come with university benefits beyond the AmeriCorps end-of-service educational award and access to organic produce from the farm.

By gathering people around shared food, shared work, and shared inquiry, the Yale Sustainable Food Project fosters a culture that draws meaning and pleasure from the connections among people, land, and food. The Sustainable Food Project directs a sustainable dining program at Yale, manages an organic farm on campus, and runs diverse programs that support exploration and academic inquiry related to food and agriculture. They are looking to hire for 2 positions.
1. The Administrative Assistant will act as an executive assistant to support the director, provide administrative support for all functions of the Yale Sustainable Food Project, and will oversee the day-to-day management of the office. This position is a half-time position. This assistant will also serve as the first point of contact for visitors, students, parents, faculty, and donors.
2. The Garden Manager & Teacher will build and oversee all aspects of the Project’s one-acre, organic garden and educational programming associated with it. The one acre organic farm serves as a year-round model for sustainable agriculture in New England and functions as an educational resource for students and the New Haven community. The Garden Manager & Teacher will direct the garden and all activities associated with it, and will report to, and work closely with, the Director of the Sustainable Food Project. The Garden Manager & Teacher will work closely and collaboratively with the Sustainable Food Project staff.
