Apprentice Garden Teacher - Edible Schoolyard - Berkeley, CA

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Apprentice Garden Teacher assists in the teaching of daily garden classes for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, and works with the ESY garden team to maintain a one-acre organic educational garden.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

TEACHING

  • Assist Garden Staff in teaching daily garden classes
  • Guide students through propagation, planting, cultivation, and maintenance of the garden, including teaching of structured lessons and activities
  • Be a positive role model for students in and out of class. Show curiosity for learning and encourage students’ interests and talents
  • Engage in creative use of garden as educational space through designing and teaching an after school class

GARDEN

  • Assist in all aspects of maintaining a healthy educational garden: including but not limited to irrigation, soil fertility, pest and weed control and chicken care
  • Share the responsibility of caring for the summer garden with Garden Manager & Teacher and Assistant Garden Manager and Teacher

COMMUNICATION & OUTREACH

  • As a member of educational and sustainable agriculture communities, represent ESY program to the local community and greater public
  • Maintain communication and relationships with ESY staff, King teachers, garden volunteers, parents, neighbors and school garden educators
  • Participate in ESY staff meetings, program development meetings and any ESY, community or school-wide events where appropriate
  • Maintain awareness of and participate in school, individual, and media visits

TRAINING & SUPERVISION

  • Report to the Garden Manager &Teacher and collaborate with the ESY staff
  • Participate in regular feedback sessions with Garden Manager & Teacher to set goals and responsibilities, evaluate performance and reflect on education
  • Participate in Garden Trainings and other Professional Development opportunities including conferences and staff development days
  • Evaluations and ongoing mentorship will be led by Garden Manager& Teacher

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-2 years experience teaching middle or high school students
  • Comfort and experience with physical outdoor work, in all weather
  • Experience with or interest in learning about gardening in Berkeley
  • Ability to work independently, organize time and see a project through from start to finish
  • Familiarity with Bay Area youth culture
  • Bi-lingual is a plus

SALARY RANGE         $24,000 - $27,000
START DATE             December 1, 2008
