AmeriCorps VISTA position - Youth Horticulture Project - Brattleboro, VT

The Youth Horticulture Project (YHP) is a program of the University of Vermont Extension that helps at-risk youth experience success while they develop job and life skills through the growing, harvesting and marketing of vegetable crops. Programs include a farm-based job training program for teenagers, a mentoring program where teens lead elementary youth in garden and nutrition workshops, and a variety of school partnerships. As a team the youth grow vegetables, sell them at farmers’ markets and provide them for donation to local food shelves and homeless shelters. Participants also engage in workshops aimed at teaching them a variety of social skills in addition to agricultural concepts. All programs take place at UVM Extension’s 2 acre educational farm in Brattleboro.

Youth Horticulture Project Full-Time AmeriCorps Position: The VISTA member works independently and in a team at UVM Extension’s 2-acre farm to educate youth from diverse backgrounds on the importance of a healthy, local agriculture, to create and strengthen local food-system partnerships, and to lead young people in their work on the farm and in connecting with their community in experiences of enterprise, farming, and community service.

The position starts with a regional AmeriCorps training and UVM orientation in January 2009. This position will be based in Brattleboro but may require some travel. This is not a university position and does not come with university benefits beyond the AmeriCorps end-of-service educational award and access to organic produce from the farm.

By gathering people around shared food, shared work, and shared inquiry, the Yale Sustainable Food Project fosters a culture that draws meaning and pleasure from the connections among people, land, and food. The Sustainable Food Project directs a sustainable dining program at Yale, manages an organic farm on campus, and runs diverse programs that support exploration and academic inquiry related to food and agriculture. They are looking to hire for 2 positions.

1. The Administrative Assistant will act as an executive assistant to support the director, provide administrative support for all functions of the Yale Sustainable Food Project, and will oversee the day-to-day management of the office. This position is a half-time position. This assistant will also serve as the first point of contact for visitors, students, parents, faculty, and donors.

2. The Garden Manager & Teacher will build and oversee all aspects of the Project’s one-acre, organic garden and educational programming associated with it.  The one acre organic farm serves as a year-round model for sustainable agriculture in New England and functions as an educational resource for students and the New Haven community. The Garden Manager & Teacher will direct the garden and all activities associated with it, and will report to, and work closely with, the Director of the Sustainable Food Project. The Garden Manager & Teacher will work closely and collaboratively with the Sustainable Food Project staff.

Organic Farm Education Internship - Live Earth Farm - Santa Cruz, CA

Description:
Live Earth Farm, established in 1996, is a 45 acre diversified, organic, family farm overlooking the Green Valley in the Santa Cruz area of California.  We offer a year round CSA with 700 members during the regular season.  We grow 40 different fruits and vegetables ranging from perennial fruit trees to a wide variety of annual crops.  We sell our produce at four area farmer’s markets and through a 700 member CSA program.

We are offering a new Farm Educator Internship this school year. This internship will have a unique focus on our education programs. The intern will spend at least 50% of their time on these activities and the other 50% on farm tasks. Education programs include: a weekly visit by 7th and 8th grade Montessori students, half day farm tours for students of all ages and two afternoons a week with middle school students from a local charter school.

The position will involve leading farm tours, working with ongoing farm education programs and some office work such as scheduling farm tours and processing deposits and payments.  Farm tasks include vegetable and fruit production and marketing, animal care and greenhouse management.

Qualifications:
The right person for this position will be able to demonstrate experience and basic theoretical knowledge in organic and sustainable food production systems. Ideally, you will have worked an entire season on a farm or garden project and be bilingual in Spanish.  This is a learning experience, we expect you to arrive with a good work ethic and a positive attitude.  Please be aware that farming is hard work and we require a full season commitment.  This is a position for someone seriously interested in sustainable farming, food, and community education.  It can serve as a stepping stone to pursue a career as an educator and/or farmer, as we offer the opportunity to learn the ropes of a small scale organic farming operation and farm education nonprofit.

Duration:
We ask that you arrive on the farm at the end of October.  This will give our Education Programs Coordinator, Jessica an opportunity to work with you one on one.  We ask that you stay through the end of May so that you can participate in the full school year cycle.  An additional summer internship is also a possibility.

Hours:
40 hrs/wk

Compensation:
A private room and communal kitchen, a stipend of $400/month and all of the fruit, vegetables, eggs, and goat’s milk you could want.

Farm Manager - Full Circle Farm - Sunnyvale, CA

About the farm:
Full Circle Farm is a brand new 11-acre nonprofit, educational farm in the heart of Silicon Valley. Nestled in a residential neighborhood on the back half of a local middle school, we are part of a community-focused, educational organization dedicated to bringing fresh local food and environmental and nutrition education to both students and community. 

We currently have 2.5 acres in production, and are looking for an experienced farmer to help us expand. The ideal candidate will be wholly dedicated to sustainable farming methods and utilizing our community’s involvement.

Full Circle Farm hopes to create a model system of growing healthy food for the school district and immediate community, with an emphasis on bringing affordably-priced produce to low income households. It will also serve as an inspiring green open space that showcases the importance of a healthy local food system, good nutrition and sustainable building and agricultural practices.

As Farm Manager, you will serve as the public face for an open and welcoming farming operation. You will coordinate all aspects of food production, from planning and production of a mix of crops for sale in diverse markets, to directing farm staff, interns, and volunteers, to developing and overseeing distribution and sales. You will work with and report to the Executive Staff.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Plan, grow and monitor crops and fruit trees, coordinating all aspects of farming and orchard operations
  • Develop distribution infrastructure for diverse markets and coordinate sales, harvest and delivery of product to the school district, farm stand, and other customers
  • Develop and implement organic soil fertility plan and pest management plan
  • Oversee tillage and cultivation, including safe operation of farm equipment; oversee irrigation, and greenhouse propagation
  • Execute basic maintenance of farm equipment, vehicles, buildings, irrigation system and greenhouse
  • Maintain planting and production records, including meeting certification requirements for farmer’s markets
  • Manage farm staff, train apprentices, and lead volunteers
  • Work at least one Saturday per month

Skills and qualifications:

  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, able to work with people of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds of all ages with respect and patience
  • Commitment to organic, sustainable farming methods
  • 2-3 seasons organic farming experience, including management of farm staff and/or volunteers
  • Able to drive a tractor and utilize farm equipment in a safe and effective manner
  • Able to effectively manage a small farm labor team and diverse volunteer base
  • Knowledge of soils, composting, and cover cropping
  • Experience with drip irrigation equipment and practices
  • Excellent record keeping and good computer skills
  • High standards of ethics and integrity
  • Understanding/flexibility around the unique challenges of starting a new farm operation
  • Able to lift 50+ pounds
  • Good DMV record; Able to pass background check
  • Spanish speaking a plus, but not required

Compensation:
$33,000 per year, plus health benefits. No housing is available at this time, but may become possible in the future.

Sharing the Harvest Project Coordinator/Farmer

Job Description
The Sharing the Harvest Community Farm Project is currently seeking a seasonal part-time farmer for the 2009 growing season. 

The Sharing the Harvest Community Farm Project is a collaboration between the Dartmouth YMCA, United Way of Greater New Bedford, and the Hunger Commission of Southeastern Massachusetts (a program of United Way). 

Sharing the Harvest is a community farm run by volunteers.  It was established in 2006 as a grassroots effort to alleviate hunger for children and families throughout the Southcoast region.  Through the efforts of more than 500 volunteers of all ages and abilities, thousands of children and families from Fall River to Wareham received over 15000lbs of produce in 2008.   

The Dartmouth YMCA is currently seeking a part-time season farmer from March to Mid-November to serve as the key component of our unique farming operation.  The farmer is responsible to plan, cultivate, manage, and harvest the crops.  In addition the farmer should be comfortable with soils and fertilization in order to produce healthy plants.  Sharing the Harvest is proud of its culture in sustainability and alternate farming methods. 

This position requires someone who enjoys working outdoors and has a background in farming, farm equipment, and planting.  He/She should be patient, persistent and self- motivated.  Flexibility and a practical approach to solving problems is useful.  Need to keep up with the latest in cultivation and harvesting methods.

Grower’s Assistant - The Food Project - Lincoln, MA

The Food Project is seeking two Grower’s Assistants for the 2009 growing season.  Applicants for these positions should have high energy for and interest in sustainable agriculture and youth development, as well as a commitment to teamwork.  They should also have creative energy for making a difference in the world and a passion for the vision of The Food Project.

The Grower’s Assistants will work with the Lincoln Farm Manager on our 31-acre farm in Lincoln, Massachusetts, growing, marketing, and distributing produce to shelters, soup kitchens, CSA, and Farmers’ Markets.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in organic crop production/agriculture experience.
  • Experience organizing groups safely and productively.
  • Experience teaching young people in outdoor setting.

Ecological Farming Conference Food Donations Coordinator - Watsonville, CA

The Ecological Farming Association, presenter of the Ecological Farming Conference and other sustainable agriculture events for 29 years, is seeking an experienced, energetic, detail-oriented and organized Food Donations Coordinator to join our staff. The ideal candidate will be computer and database savvy with great interpersonal skills and interest in/knowledge of organic and natural foods.

Target Hire Date: September 22, 2008. 32 – 40 hours per week. This position is temporary through February 15, 2009 and not eligible for benefits, except to the extent required by provision of law. Non-exempt, hourly $15 - $20/hour depending on experience.

Job Description

The Food Donations Coordinator will support the Conference Food Coordinator in the production of delicious organic meals, snacks and reception catering for the 1500 participants of the annual Ecological Farming Conference (January 21 - 24, 2009) by coordinating the procurement of food for the program, mostly through donations from organic and natural foods companies and farms.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage Filemaker database of potential donors.
  • Manage donor solicitation through letters, e-mail and phone.
  • Coordinate donation shipping and deliveries.
  • Place orders for donation shortfalls.
  • Coordinate with communications staff for food program information in the conference program, signage, and table cards.
  • Receive and organize donated and purchased items at conference, trouble shooting with Food Coordinator for shorted items and substitutions.
  • Coordinate donor and venue appreciation activities.
  • Support Food Coordinator onsite at the conference (January 19 – 24, 2009) in implementing planned menus and food, and organizing ingredients for meals, catering, snack bars, and farmers market
  • Participate in post-conference wrap up and evaluation.

The Food Donations Coordinator will be assigned other conference duties as needed, including customer service and registration.

Capacity Building Coordinator - World Hunger Year - New York, NY
